Mercy Brown Bag Program: A Step Toward Sustainability with StopWaste

At Mercy Brown Bag Program (MBBP), we’ve always been dedicated to addressing food insecurity among seniors. Now, we’re taking a big step forward toward sustainability with the help of an inspiring partnership with StopWaste. Together, we’ve implemented a reusable bag initiative that not only reduces waste but also ensures a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective future for the program.

Moving Beyond Paper Bags

For decades, MBBP has relied on brown paper bags for grocery distributions to seniors. While this approach has served us well, the increasing costs and environmental impact made it clear we needed a change. With the constant growth of the program, these expenses have added up, and the environmental toll was no longer aligned with our values.

Thanks to StopWaste, a public agency within Alameda County committed to reducing waste, we found a sustainable solution. Through their support, we’ve transitioned to durable, reusable bags that meet the needs of our program and the seniors we serve.

Durable, Cost-Effective Solutions

The benefits of this shift are immediate and impactful. Designed with seniors in mind, these reusable bags are built to last at least two years, reducing the need for replacements and lowering costs. By the end of 2024, MBBP saved $1,800 from this initiative, and in 2025, savings are anticipated to be over $12,000. This means we can reallocate those funds to other critical needs, such as providing fresh protein and produce, ensuring we continue to meet the growing demand in our community.

A Positive Environmental Impact

Switching to reusable bags also helps us address one of today’s most pressing issues: waste reduction. By eliminating paper bags, MBBP has already prevented over 700 pounds of waste from entering landfills. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce our carbon footprint and make our operations more eco-friendly.

Since 2020, the Mercy Brown Bag Program has grown by 50%, serving more seniors than ever. As we expand, being eco-conscious is vital to ensure that our growth doesn’t come at the expense of the environment.

Looking to the Future

The transition to reusable bags is just the start of MBBP’s sustainability journey. From sourcing food to packaging, we’re exploring every opportunity to minimize waste and reduce our environmental impact. By the end of 2025, with real findings under our belt, we hope to serve as a model for how non-profits can make a meaningful difference for both their bottom line and the planet.

The partnership with StopWaste is a powerful reminder that environmental stewardship and social good go hand in hand. As MBBP continues to provide nutritious food to thousands of seniors each month, we’re proud to do so in a way that benefits both our community and the Earth.

Together, we’re building a legacy of care and sustainability for future generations. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue this exciting journey toward a greener future!
