CommonSpirit Health Grocery Store

Expanding our Programs Day by Day

Mercy Brown Bag’s CommonSpirit Health Grocery Store, located in Oakland’s Fruitvale district at Mercy Retirement and Care Center, opened its doors in 2022. That first day, we served three older adults in need. By the end of our first month, we had hosted 150 shoppers.

A man pushes a cart filled with grocery bags at an outdoor food distribution event, while other people receive goods from a truck in the background.

In the Summer of 2025, the Store Averaged 2,400 Shoppers a Month.

Twice a month, our senior clients fill their grocery bags with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fresh protein (chicken/fish/eggs) as well as shelf stable goods. Seniors often gather hours before the store opens to socialize, play cards, and exchange stories.

The CommonSpirit Health Grocery is open Monday-Friday from 10-2pm. It closes at 12:30 for a 30 minute staff lunch every day and is closed on five national holidays
